Receiving an erroneous result typically indicates that the measurement was performed in a manner that prevented Body Smart from accurately assessing your body composition.
Typically, user movement or not following measurement guidelines closely are the main reasons for receiving an erroneous body composition measurement.
When a body composition measurement fails, you will see an error screen on your scale, as detailed below.

If you receive a body composition error, please follow these guidelines for successful body composition measurements:
- Make sure you step on the scale barefoot and stay completely still during measurement.
- Make sure that you always use the handle when you want to take a body composition measurement. Without the handle, a body composition measurement is not possible.
- Hold the handle with both hands and ensure each hand is holding the correct side marked L (Left) and R (Right). Place your thumbs on each of the top electrodes on the handle.
- Make sure your scale is clean. Click here for cleaning instructions.
- Dry feet might prevent the body composition measurement. As such, we advise that you weigh yourself after your shower so that your skin is in its best condition for the measurement.
- Make sure the scale glass is not scratched, as this could prevent the glass electrodes in the scale to get in good contact with your feet.
-
Make sure your profile information such as height, gender, and age are entered correctly within the Withings App by going to your Profile.
In order to successfully take body composition measurements:
- Your age must be between 16 and 89 years old
- Your height must be between 3 ft / 90 cm - 8 ft / 249 cm
- Your weight must be between 64 lbs / 29 kg - 595 lbs / 270 kg - Make sure that you don't have any Modes enabled that would prevent body composition from being measured*. This includes Weight-Only Mode and Pregnancy Mode. You can disable them from the Devices tab under 'Modes'.
* If you are pregnant, we do not recommend measuring body composition for the duration of your pregnancy. The Body Smart has not been tested and/or validated for usage during pregnancy. Due to its impedance technology related to the usage of limited electric currents and for precautionary purposes, we recommend that you disable impedance-based measurement capability if you are pregnant. You can do this by enabling either Weight-Only Mode or Pregnancy Mode by going to Devices > Body Smart > Modes and make sure either mode is toggled on.
