Even when at rest, your body is constantly burning calories by performing basic functions to sustain life, such as your circulatory system, breathing and cell production.
What is Basal Metabolic Rate?
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is a calculation of the amount of calories your body needs for its most basic life-sustaining functions. This means that while you're at rest, in a temperate environment with an inactive digestive system, your body should be operating at or close to its basal metabolic rate.
How does my scale measure BMR?
Your scale will calculate your BMR for you by factoring in metrics such as your weight, BMI, age, height and sex. Then it will give you the precise average caloric intake your body needs to maintain that rate.
Where can I find my BMR measurements?
To find your BMR measurement, you simply need to open the Withings App, open any weight measurement either on your Home or Measure tabs, and scroll down to find your BMR.
Note: BMR is not displayed directly on the scale.
What is the ideal BMR?
On average, men tend to require more calories throughout the day than women to maintain their BMR.
Men burn an average of between 1600-1800 kcal/day and women burn an average of 1550 kcal/day but many individual factors going into determining your most personal BMR.
Metabolic Age
As you mature through childhood, your BMR increases until it peaks at around age 16. Your metabolic age is determined by comparing your Basal Metabolic Rate to the average BMR of your current age group.
If your Metabolic age is higher than your actual age, then this may indicate that your metabolism is not as efficient as it could be.
