What are breathing disturbances?

Breathing disturbances are referring to interruptions in your sleep patterns. These disturbances, which impairing the restorativeness of sleep, may also be associated with conditions such as sleep apnea.

What is the goal of this feature?

Sleep detects breathing disturbances and provides insights to indicate potential signs of sleep apnea. By embedding this new feature, Sleep gives access to new preventive health information via its imperceptible and automatic tracking from under the mattress. And thanks to its self-assessment contents, articles on breathing disorders, and actionable lifestyle tips, Withings empowers users who experience breathing disturbances, to reduce them, or be informed on how they can impact your health.

Why is sleep apnea such a concern?

Sleep apnea is a serious and potentially chronic condition, impairing the ability to recover properly during sleep and causing excessive daytime sleepiness. This can affect well-being and safety and even lead to depression.

In addition to well-being, it represents a known health risk: if left untreated, sleep apnea increases the risk of having a heart attack, stroke or premature death by 2 to 3 times.

How common is sleep apnea?

In the general population, an estimated 5–17% of people experience some form of sleep apnea. However, it is estimated that 80% of apneic are unaware they have the condition.

How accurate is the detection of breathing disturbances?

A study has been supervised by the sleep lab at Paris-Béclère hospital and led by Pr. Escourrou, a French sleep doctor. We analyzed the breathing patterns in a clinical dataset of hundreds of hours of sleep, using both the gold standard for sleep tracking (PSG) and Sleep, in order to develop an accurate algorithm.
