Why does Athlete Mode exist?
Highly trained bodies are physiologically different:
- Denser muscle tissue
- A different water-to-muscle ratio
- Overall higher body density
Using the standard setting, these differences can cause the scale to overestimate body fat. When Athlete Mode is enabled, the scale switches to an alternative algorithm calibrated for this population.
With Athlete Mode enabled:
- Your fat mass readings will be lower
- Your muscle mass readings will be higher
How can I tell if I should use Athlete mode?
Consider enabling Athlete Mode if you meet both of the following:
- 12+ hours of exercise per week
- A resting heart rate under 60 bpm
It can also apply if you have a lifelong fitness history, even if you do less now.
Note: There's no exact point at which you become an "athlete." If you're in between, try both modes. Athlete Mode tends to read a little low, and standard mode a little high.
How do I activate Athlete mode?
In order to enable Athlete Mode, simply:
- Open the Withings App
- Tap Devices in the upper right
- Choose your scale
- Scroll down to Personalise Your Weigh-In
- Tap Modes, then enable Athlete Mode.
Note: After enabling or disabling Athlete Mode, weigh yourself 2–3 times, or wait 24 hours, for the change to take effect.
