Hi there, For those that want to extend the life of their watch and make it a little better for reading the time. I have a steel HR sport in black, the glass was scratched pretty bad. So I took the opportunity to upgrade the CX /UX by painting the watch hands with white enamel while the crystal was off. Huge improvement to the user comfort in that you can now actually see the hands through the web of reflections.
This is, it may loose its water proof status… ! !
You will need :
1…33.5mm DOUBLE dome crystal, mineral or sapphire 1.1 to 1.3mm thick
2…33.5 internal 34.5 external or thereabouts I gasket, I got a white one which actually looks quite good with white hands. It’s slightly oversize for the watch aperture but ensures a tight seal. So will need a bit of persuasion into the watch.
3…Small sealed container and some silica gel bags for drying the air prior to assembly
4….Tooth pick and a small amount of white enamel/gloss paint.
5….Tooth pick and a small puddle of silicone oil/wd40 etc.
If your glass is out already, great, if not to crack and remove the scratch glass I used a G clamp to stress the glass so it breaks without damaging the face or hands. Wind it up slowly making sure it’s only the glass getting loaded. They go with a bang, and protect the sensor with some wood, cloth as that gets loaded up on the other side. Clear all the glass debris out really carefully, don’t rub, blow, hoover or lightly dust off the glass dust with a fine soft paint brush. The glass dust will scratch the face and oled screen really easily. Once all that is out, make sure you remove the black plastic gasket, I tried to use my original and I think it’s a once use only piece, a crease prevented the crystal seating squarely. When you are happy with all of the cleaning, use a tooth pick to add a super small amount of gloss to the hands, making sure it is thin enough so the hands pass underneath each other. Avoid painting around the hub of the hands, won’t add visually and huge risk of locking the hands up with paint. I didnt paint the red status hand, can see that one ok normally. When the paint is dry, drop the I gasket into the face, making sure the bevel is facing upwards else the glass won’t snap into the I channel very well. I then used another tooth pick to add some silicone oil to the I gasket, tiny amount on the bevel to aid assembly. Don’t get it on the watch face, tiny amount only. Then clean the new crystal on the underside and place in the watch loosely. Put the watch with the glass loosely in place ready but not pushed in place and store it in a sealed container for a couple of days with silica gel packets. This will dry the air that you are about to trap inside the watch and will prevent fogging in the cold. Maybe not necessary if you assemble in a dry air day. Once you are happy it’s as dry as it’s going to get, gently push the crystal in place. It should pop squarely into the I ring but may go slightly squiffed. Just work it in so that the glass is then firmly seated in the gasket. Give it a clean and there you have a new watch, one you can read and certainly the double domed glass I have has less reflection. This will give my watch a few more years of life, better for the environment with a useful improvement in readability. I picked up 6 glasses for about £6 off eBay and one gasket for about £4.. the other stuff is in the house. So cheap . Care with the silica bags, not too friendly! Thought about assembling in the freezer at -18degC. Zero moisture. The glass sits slightly below the rim, the exact position will depend on the thick of the glass, it then is flush with a TPU screen protector. Hope it helps and keeps some e waste out of land fill. @withings, start a recycling process, free post bag to collect all your flock when finished. They are not the best for disassembly, total nightmare for recycling.
