WS-50 Display turns on, then quickly fades and turns off

Quite a few "stopped working" posts here, but haven't seen anyone mention the problem I'm having.

Stepping on the display, it starts to calculate weight, the display fades, then turns off. All this happens in less than 2 seconds. Step off and back on, display bright, fades, off. Pretty consistent behavior.

At this rate, I'm not planning on buying another Withings/Nokia product, but I'm curious if anyone else has this display issue and if they were able to fix it.
