open app on phone, then start walking activity on watch..... watch should then sync with app on phone & show the start of walking activity to record steps & distance etc. Watch doesn't have GPS it uses you mobile GPS through bluetooth connection. Watch alone will only record steps, pulse etc.

Thank you, that clears that up. Need phone at all times, for the GPS.

Yep, as stated, you'll need to take your phone along if you want connected GPS tracking. I am hoping to find an alternative where I could use either a bluetooth GPS puck, or a small and cheap (and for my need, waterproof) phone in place of my normal phone. However I've yet to find a suitable product.

Also be aware that the current Health Mate - Strava integration seems problematic. When it works, it works very well. However quite a lot of my rides have seen data go missing somewhere between Health Mate and Starva. That one's currently being investigated by Withings support.

Thank you esp the info on Strava integration. At the moment I am doubling up to compare. HR Steel looks nice but I am not sure it is worth it.

You're welcome. I recently came up the the end of my 30 day no quibble return period, but decided to keep the watch. I'm betting on the frustrating Strava integration problems being temporary teething trouble. Fingers crossed Withings will deliver. Hopefully I'll also find a suitable and cheap device to enable me to use connected GPS on the water. All leads so far have proved to be dead ends.

It's also a shame there isn't more active input from some Withings 'ambassadors' on these forums. That would make for better product experience, happier users and improved market reputation.

I notice that Withings have just dropped the prices of the Steel HR and Steel HR Sport by £50.
