I get my notifications ok when the phone is on my pocket or on the desk, but 3m across the kitchen and I no longer get any notifications. It's not the microwave or walls, I get the same when my phone is on the charger and I'm in the bathroom with the door open. Is this normal?

I always put my phone on my computer desk while lying on my bed with my watch and I still get notifications. Bluetooth can be strange sometimes and I think range depends on the surroundings as well. For me, your scenario is normal. You can try to experiment with different locations though.
