+1 to this. I don't need GPS tracking from the "running" option while on a treadmill.

Treadmill would be a very welcome addition to the activities list! Doesn't need GPS tracking, just accurate count of steps. Would really appreciate it if it was added.

I would like this too, but don't see how they could accurately measure steps & distance without linking to info collected by the treadmill. Calories aren't an issue because no fitness tracker (or treadmill) accurately measures calories burned anyhow and users have no way of knowing whether their burned calorie numbers are correct or not. Steps & distance we know, and we want proper credit for our progress toward goals for those. So it would be great to find a way to that better.

I don't know how they estimate steps during "indoor running" now, but one way they might do better would be to model the relationship between each wearer's prior HR and steps & distance data from their history of walks, runs, etc., then use that model to make a personalized prediction of steps & distance from HR recorded during a treadmill session. The same approach could be applied to stationary bikes based on user's history of outdoor cycling.

It would be computationally intensive to calculate and update user-specific models regularly for millions of users. If that's feasible, after a user had enough walks, runs etc. recorded, you would start to get better and better predictions from their individualized models than from the model of an "average person's" HR - steps & distance relationships. Even with advanced user-modeling though, the best estimate of predicted steps & distance numbers are probably never going to be nearly as accurate as more directly measured estimates from GPS or uploaded from the treadmill.

My guess is that for very accurate steps and distance numbers we'll have to wait for withings to develop an API specification that treadmill manufacturers adopt to allow uploads to Health Mate.

So withings, please do one or both of these things if you aren't already: develop and deliver user-model based predictions of steps & distance (and cycling distance) and/or develop an API for uploading data from treadmills, cycles, etc.

    Thanks
